Setting Up Variable Products for Jewellery in WooCommerce with Live Metal Rates
Introduction
Most jewellery isn’t sold in a single fixed configuration. A gold ring comes in different sizes. A bangle set comes in different weights. A necklace is available in 18K and 22K. A chain design is offered at 10g, 15g, and 20g.
In WooCommerce, these are called variable products — a single product listing with multiple variants, each potentially having a different price, weight, or configuration. Getting variable products right for jewellery is one of the more technically involved parts of setting up a WooCommerce jewellery store, particularly when those prices need to be driven by live metal rates.
This guide walks you through setting up variable jewellery products with the ITS Jewellery Price Plugin so each variant is correctly priced based on its specific metal content — and updates automatically when rates change.
Why Variable Products Matter for Jewellery Retail
Before getting into the setup, it’s worth understanding why variable products are the right approach for size/weight/purity variants — as opposed to listing each variation as a separate product.
Consolidated product pages rank better in SEO. A single product page for “22K Gold Rope Chain” with weight variants (10g, 15g, 20g) accumulates reviews, backlinks, and search impressions in one place. Three separate product listings for the same chain split that SEO value.
Better customer experience. Customers naturally expect to select a weight or size from a dropdown on a single product page, not to navigate to three different products. Variable products match this expectation.
Simpler inventory management. Managing stock levels per variant is cleaner than managing multiple standalone products with similar names.
Accurate price comparison. When a customer selects a heavier variant and sees the price increase with a corresponding breakup update, they understand exactly why the price changed. This transparency is only possible when variants are on the same product page.
Understanding WooCommerce Variable Products
In WooCommerce, a variable product has:
Attributes: The characteristics that define each variation. For jewellery, these might be “Weight” (10g, 15g, 20g), “Purity” (18K, 22K), “Size” (ring sizes), or “Style” (plain, enamel, rhodium-plated).
Variations: Each specific combination of attribute values. If you have Weight (10g, 15g) and Purity (18K, 22K), you’d have four variations: 10g/18K, 10g/22K, 15g/18K, and 15g/22K.
Each variation can have its own price, stock level, SKU, and — with the ITS plugin — its own metal weight and charges.
Setting Up a Variable Gold Jewellery Product
Let’s walk through a concrete example: a gold rope chain available in three weights (10g, 15g, 20g) in 22K gold.
Step 1: Create the Product
Go to Products → Add New. Enter the product name: “22K Gold Rope Chain.”
In the Product Data dropdown at the top of the Product Data section, select Variable product.
Step 2: Add the Weight Attribute
Click the Attributes tab in Product Data.
Click Add to add a new attribute.
- Name: Weight
- Values: 10 Grams | 15 Grams | 20 Grams (enter each value separated by the pipe symbol |)
- Check Used for variations
- Click Save attributes
Step 3: Create the Variations
Click the Variations tab.
In the dropdown, select Create variations from all attributes and click Go. WooCommerce will automatically create three variations: 10 Grams, 15 Grams, and 20 Grams.
Click on each variation to expand it. For each, you’ll set:
- An SKU (optional but recommended for inventory tracking)
- Stock status
- Any variation-specific image (a photo of the chain at that weight, if you have them)
Do not set prices manually — the ITS plugin will handle pricing. Leave the price fields blank for now.
Step 4: Assign Jewellery Pricing to Each Variation
With the ITS Jewellery Price Plugin installed, each variation has a Jewellery Price section within its expanded panel.
For the 10 Gram variation:
- Metal Type: Gold 22K
- Metal Weight: 10
- Making Charge: ₹300/gram (flat) — adjust to your actual charge
- Wastage: 3%
For the 15 Gram variation:
- Metal Type: Gold 22K
- Metal Weight: 15
- Making Charge: ₹300/gram (flat)
- Wastage: 3%
For the 20 Gram variation:
- Metal Type: Gold 22K
- Metal Weight: 20
- Making Charge: ₹280/gram (flat) — slightly lower making charge for heavier, longer chain
- Wastage: 3%
Click Save changes at the bottom of the Variations section.
The plugin immediately calculates and sets the price for each variation based on today’s Gold 22K rate. You’ll see the price fields populate automatically.
Step 5: Verify on the Front End
Go to the product’s public page. You should see:
- A “Weight” dropdown (showing 10 Grams, 15 Grams, 20 Grams)
- When you select a weight, the displayed price updates to show that variant’s price
- The price breakup table updates to show the metal value, making charge, and wastage for the selected weight
This live price update as the customer changes the selection is one of the most compelling experiences you can create on a jewellery product page. It answers the implicit question “why does the heavier chain cost more?” with complete transparency.
Variable Products Across Multiple Purities
Now let’s look at a more complex example: a ring design available in both 18K and 22K gold, with different weights for each purity.
Product: Classic Solitaire Ring Setting
Variants:
- 18K Gold, 3.5g
- 22K Gold, 4.0g (slightly heavier because 22K is softer and needs more metal for the same strength)
Creating the Purity Attribute
Follow the same process as above, but create a “Purity” attribute with values: 18K Gold | 22K Gold.
Creating and Pricing Variations
Create variations from all attributes. For each variation:
18K Gold variation:
- Metal Type: Gold 18K
- Metal Weight: 3.5
- Making Charge: 15% (percentage — higher craft for a setting)
- Wastage: 4%
22K Gold variation:
- Metal Type: Gold 22K
- Metal Weight: 4.0
- Making Charge: 12% (percentage — slightly lower making charge percentage)
- Wastage: 4%
When a customer selects “18K Gold,” the product prices using the current Gold 18K rate. When they select “22K Gold,” it switches to the Gold 22K rate. Both update correctly when you perform your daily rate update — no product editing required.
Combining Weight and Purity Attributes
You can combine both attributes — offering a ring in both 18K and 22K, each available in 3.5g and 4.5g. This creates a 2×2 matrix: four variations.
This is technically straightforward with the plugin — each variation gets its own metal type and weight configuration. The main consideration is product page UX: with two dropdowns (Purity and Weight), customers need to make two selections before seeing the final price. Test this on your site to ensure the experience is smooth.
For very complex variant matrices (3+ attributes), consider whether a single variable product is really the best presentation, or whether separate product listings for each major category might be cleaner for customers to navigate.
Ring Sizing and Variable Products
Ring sizing is a special case of variable products where the variations (sizes 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, etc.) typically don’t have meaningfully different metal weights. The weight difference between a ring size 5 and a ring size 9 is usually only 0.5–1.5 grams for most ring designs.
Two approaches for ring sizing:
Approach 1: Fixed weight, all sizes same price. Use the average weight of the ring across sizes and apply the same jewellery pricing to all size variants. Size is a WooCommerce attribute, but pricing is the same regardless of which size is selected. This is simpler to manage and acceptable if the weight variation is small.
Approach 2: Weight-accurate pricing per size. Enter the precise metal weight for each ring size. This gives more accurate pricing but requires knowing (and entering) the exact weight for each size. Your manufacturer can usually provide a size/weight chart for each design.
For most rings, Approach 1 is sufficient and far more practical. For heavy, high-value rings where the weight difference between sizes is significant, Approach 2 gives more accurate margins.
Variable Products with Mixed Materials (Gold + Diamond)
For diamond jewellery where the piece has both a gold component and diamond components, the variable product structure depends on your pricing approach.
Common approach: Price the gold mounting using the jewellery price formula (weight × rate + making + wastage), and include the diamond value either in the making charge or as a fixed addition.
For example, a diamond pendant where the gold setting is 3g of 18K gold and the diamond is priced at a fixed ₹25,000:
- Metal: Gold 18K
- Metal Weight: 3g
- Making Charge: ₹25,000 + (craftsmanship at whatever your standard rate is) — entered as a flat total
- Wastage: 4%
This approximation works well when the diamond pricing is relatively stable. For stores with frequent diamond cost changes, a more sophisticated approach (using a custom “Diamond” metal type with its own updateable rate) gives better control.
Troubleshooting Variable Product Pricing
Variation prices aren’t showing on the product page
Ensure each variation has the Jewellery Price fields filled in. If even one variation has no metal type assigned, it may display a blank or $0 price. Go to each variation and verify the configuration is complete.
Price doesn’t update when variant is selected
This is usually a JavaScript conflict with your theme. Check your browser’s developer console for JS errors when selecting a variation. If there’s a conflict, contact the ITS plugin support team — they can advise on theme compatibility or provide a fix.
Breakup doesn’t update with variant selection
Same as above — usually a theme JS conflict. The breakup should update dynamically in sync with the price. If it’s showing static data, investigate any JavaScript conflicts on the product page.
All variations show the same price
Check that you’ve entered different metal weights for each variation, not the same weight for all. If all variations use the same metal weight, they’ll calculate to the same price.
Best Practices for Variable Jewellery Products
Keep variation count manageable. A product with 3–5 variations is easy to manage and easy for customers to navigate. A product with 15+ variations becomes unwieldy — consider splitting it into multiple product listings by primary differentiator.
Use variation images where possible. If you have photos of the piece at different weights or in different purities, assign variation-specific images. When a customer selects “22K Gold,” they should see the 22K version’s photo.
Name variations clearly. “10 Grams” is better than “Small.” “22K Gold” is better than “Option B.” Descriptive variation names reduce customer confusion and support better SEO.
Set a default variation. In the Variations tab, you can set a default selection. Choose the most popular variant — typically the middle weight option — as the default so customers land on the most relevant price point.
Test every variation before publishing. With formula pricing, a misconfigured weight or wrong metal assignment can produce wildly incorrect prices. Test each variation’s front-end display before making the product live.
Conclusion
Variable products are essential infrastructure for most jewellery stores — and with the ITS Jewellery Price Plugin, each variant gets its own correctly-calculated price based on the live metal rate. The configuration takes a few minutes per product, and once done, every variation updates automatically whenever you change a metal rate.
The result is a professional product experience: customers see accurate, live-priced variants, a transparent breakup for whichever option they select, and a seamless weight or purity selection that makes the purchase decision easy.
